Picturing America--The Veteran in a New Field, 1865

The Veteran in a New Field, 1865 is located at the end of the C-aisle. Painted by Winslow Homer in 1865 a few months after Appomattox.

What does a figure carrying a scythe usually symbolize? Whose deaths might Homer be alluding to? What might a boutntiful field of wheat represent?
